Alex asked me to make an R2-D2 for him. I used windshield wiper motors for the drive wheels and servos to make the body lean forward and back and to make the head to spin. Another servo was rigged up to an electronic circuit that says “Beep boo boo boop beep” whenever you press the button. The body was made from a trash bin, the head was a salad bowl and the legs were made of plywood. I found a 12V wheelchair battery and hard wired it to a DC power adapter that you plug in to recharge. You control it with an RC transmitter that I use for my model helicopters.
We used to play with this in the park across the street. It’s not really a robot, of course, but the kids didn’t mind. We eventually sold him at a yard sale to some kids down the street.
